ISP-grade, not office-grade
We work daily inside BGP tables, route reflectors and peering fabrics — the same discipline is applied whether you run 40 000 subscribers or 40 staff.
About
The Default Gateway is a South African network engineering and ISP consulting practice. We work in the layer most providers cannot staff for: senior routing, edge and operations engineering.
We started The Default Gateway after years inside South African ISPs and carrier networks, watching the same pattern repeat: capable teams, real infrastructure investment, and performance problems nobody had the bandwidth to properly diagnose. Bandwidth kept getting bought. Latency kept getting worse.
So we built a practice around measurement first. We baseline networks, find the actual constraint, and engineer the fix — then document it so the client's own team can operate what we hand over. The same discipline scaled down neatly to business site networks, which is why we run two service pillars today.
To raise the engineering standard of South African networks — so that operators can defend their SLAs with data, and businesses stop treating the network as an unpredictable cost centre.
“Measure, then engineer. Everything else is guessing with expensive hardware.”

How we work
We work daily inside BGP tables, route reflectors and peering fabrics — the same discipline is applied whether you run 40 000 subscribers or 40 staff.
Every engagement starts with measurement: latency baselines, packet loss maps, capacity headroom and routing sanity. Recommendations follow the data.
MikroTik, Juniper, Cisco, Huawei, Arista, FRR, Ubiquiti. We design for your budget and skills, not a reseller quota.
Handover includes topology diagrams, IPAM, ASN and prefix records, change logs and runbooks so your NOC can own it.
